Gingko biloba is the most widely prescribed herb world-wide. There are many excellent reasons to use gingko and it is without side effects. The gingko flavinoids are potent anti-oxidants that prevent oxidative damage to cells throughout the body, including the arterial lining. Terpenes, also found in gingko, are neuro-protective, meaning these compounds protect the cells in the central nervous system from damage. We know that gingko biloba increases cerebral blood flow, helping to replenish oxygen starved parts of the brain. It’s usefulness in treatment of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dementia, and memory disturbances is attributed to this effect specifically. In connection with its positive effect on circulation, gingko blocks platelet activating factor (PAT) which is involved in clotting, inflammation, and loss of cerebral function. (Caution is advised when taking gingko with anti-coagulants such as coumadin or heparin.)
Studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1997 showed that people who take gingko for mild to severe dementia can improve their ability to think clearly and communicate with others. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and circulatory benefits of gingko biloba make it a very good choice in the natural approach to inner ear disorders, memory disturbances, prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, eczema, and seasonal allergies.
We recommend using only standardized, bioavailable forms of gingko, either alone or combined with DMAE and other nutrients with neuro-protective properties. DMAE is also a precursor to neurotransmitters essential for memory and optimal brain function, which we have found to be highly effective in improving concentration and memory.
