It’s that time of year again when we prepare for winter’s cold and flu season.  Here are some helpful hints to be proactive and prevent illness for yourself and your family. I highly recommend keeping some of the supplements listed below on hand, so you can start them right away if you begin to get sick or have been exposed to colds, flu or other infectious diseases.

  1. Vitamin C: make sure to take 1000 to 3000 mg per day to keep your immune system strong. Take more (up to 10,000 mg /day as tolerated) if you’re fighting a virus.
  2. For the Flu:
    1. Prevention: start Mucococcinum 1 pill every other week in October through April.
    2. To recover faster if sick: start Oscillococcinum 1 tube 3 times a day immediately.
  3. General Immune Support Supplements:
    1. Immune Shield, Immunitone, Defense Factors, Transfer Factor, Esberitox(chewable-good for kids!), Elderberry Extract (liquid- also good for kids or sore throats) are specifically formulated combinations of immune supportive nutrients and herbs, including zinc, echinacea, astragalus, and others.
    2. Take 1 to 2 per day if you are susceptible to getting sick or are frequently exposed to viruses (such as teachers). Take up to 6/day if coming down with viral symptoms.
  4. Sinus Relief:  Euphorbium Sinus Relief nasal spray or, if you have chronic problems, we can have special preparation compounded for you.
  5. Natural Antibiotics:  These are effective in a variety of viral and bacterial infections.  Keep at least one around and call us if you are ill for specific instructions relevant to your situation.
    1. Allicidin (2/day), Aloe/200x (2/day), Olive Leaf Extract (6-8/day), Oregano Oil(6/day), Lauricidin (1 tsp 3 times/day), Colloidal Silver (1/2 tsp/day-can be used as a nasal rinse also).
  6. If you are having difficulty getting over an infection, call us and ask if an intravenous drip in the office might be appropriate and do the trick to speed your recovery.
  7. To prevent the spread of infections, use Organic Essentials Hand Wash with natural grapefruit seed extract, instead of the environmental toxin, triclosan, that is contained in antibacterial soaps.
  8. Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water.

I hope these suggestions keep you healthy all winter long!
